Description
Behavioural Incident Analysis is a technique developed by Sodak built on the principles of behavioural and evolutionary science, and design thinking to enable a better understanding of human behaviour and the environments in which they occur.
The toolkit is an interactive exploration and facilitation process that uses principles from behavioural science and nudge theory to help you analyse why a behaviour happened and what you can do to make what you want more likely. The process provides you with both an analysis and a design.
We have toolkits for –
- Incident Analysis and Health & Safety
- Assurance and Verification
- Security, cyber and physical
The toolkits are a great way to work with the techniques to better understand why incidents occur and design environments that promote safer and healthier work practices through the application of behavioural science. Nudge for safety.
Add on a 1hour online Coaching session taking you through the BIA.
The toolkits form an integral part of our Behavioural Science programmes. If you would chat about our programmes or workshops

I’ve used the BIA tool in multiple areas of Network Rail over the past 5 years (need to check when I went on the training.) The tool was a game changer in our cultural transformation programme for three reasons. First of all, It enabled us to take action quickly when responding to incidents as the tool is very easy to deploy with limited prep needed once trained. Second, it enabled us to create a true blame free culture when looking into an incident as we are looking at the environment around our staff rather than them individually, this was evident in feedback from staff. Finally, the “hard work” is done by the tool, we don’t need to train all of our staff up in behavioural science to enable us to look at incidents differently. The tool sends people down that path no matter what previous experience people have had in behaviour or culture. We did see that people became more interested in behavioural science and requested further learning once interacting with the tool.
We’ve evolved the use of the tool into scenario planning and pro active investigations, even creating a specific SPAD (Signal Passed At Danger) tool in collaboration with Sodak and our Train Operating Companies.
I recommended the tool to anyone looking to change behaviours in their business.

The Behavioral Incident Analysis (BIA) tool is a game changer. It allows you to facilitate in a consistent way that always leads to reducing risk in an environment. I started using the tool by analyzing injury analysis that we had already completed. What I found in every case was that we were very good at coming up with antecedents and struggled to sustain. When you properly follow the BIA process by using the supplied cards to facilitate, it is impossible to come up with a solution that you cannot sustain. Revere Copper
